Are flushable wipes safe to flush?

Yes, you can put flushable wipes down the toilet. But just because you can, does that mean you should?

It seems like a silly question. Flushable is in the name after all! But you might be surprised to find out that the answer is No! Do not flush wipes, even if they are labeled as flushable! The marketing companies argue that because polyethylene and cotton microfibers are biodegradable, they can say that their wipes safe to flush. While it’s true that the wipes include these materials, they don’t disintegrate nearly as fast as your normal TP. Unfortunately, flushable wipes are the culprit to many a drain clog.

In addition to wipes, you should never flush the following items down the toilet to avoid clogs and other plumbing problems:

1. Feminine hygiene products, including tampons, pads, and applicators.
2. Paper towels, facial tissues, and napkins
3. Dental floss, hair, and pet litter
4. Medications and other chemicals
5. Cooking grease and oils
6. Cotton balls and swabs
7. Cigarette butts and other debris

A good rule of thumb is if it is not human waste or toilet paper, it doesn’t belong in the toilet!
