Garbage Disposals DYI
If your garbage disposal is acting up, here’s a DIY guide to troubleshoot and fix common issues:
1. Safety
- Turn off the power to the disposal. Either unplug it from the wall or turn off the circuit breaker that controls the disposal.
2. Check for Jams
- Inspect the disposal with a flashlight. Sometimes, items like silverware, bones, or fibrous foods can get stuck.
- Use tongs or pliers to remove any obstructions carefully.
3. Manually Turn the Blades
- Find the manual reset/turning mechanism (usually at the bottom of the disposal).
- Use the Allen wrench (inserted into the hex-shaped hole) to manually turn the blades. This can help free up anything stuck.
4. Reset the Disposal
- Press the reset button (usually a red button on the bottom of the disposal). This resets the internal circuit breaker that may have tripped due to overload.
5. Check the Drain
- Ensure the drain line is not clogged. If water isn’t draining, use a plunger or plumbing snake to clear the line.
- If you suspect the issue is a clog farther down, you may need to disassemble the plumbing below the disposal.
6. Test the Disposal
- Once you’ve done the above steps, plug the disposal back in, switch the power back on, and test it by running cold water and turning the disposal on.
- If the disposal works, you’re done! If not, proceed to the next steps.
7. Check for Electrical Issues
- It could be an electrical issue if your disposal is still not working.
- Check the power switch and the circuit breaker to ensure everything functions properly.
- You can use a multimeter to test the power outlet.
8. Fixing Leaks
- If you notice any leaks around the disposal, it could be from the mounting ring or discharge tube.
- Tighten the mounting screws or replace any worn-out seals to stop leaks.
9. Call K-Tech Plumbing
- If you’ve tried all the above and the disposal still isn’t working, it may need a replacement or professional repair. Call K-Tech Plumbing – 801-785-0779, Text 385-233-0657, or schedule online k-techplumbing.com
