#1 Hot Water
The first step is to attempt flushing the sink with hot water. This can effectively loosen any obstructions or clogs. Slowly pour hot water down the drain in stages, allowing it to work through the clog. Repeat this process several times.
#2 Plunger
If the initial attempt fails, use a plunger to create suction and break the clog. Place the plunger over the drain, ensuring there is sufficient water in the sink to cover the plunger’s base. Pump the plunger up and down vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Remove the plunger and check if the water drains. Repeat the process if necessary.
#3 Baking Soda and Vinegar
This combination can aid in dissolving organic matter that may be causing the clog. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. You should observe fizzing and bubbling. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with hot water.
#4 Plumbing Snake
For deeper clogs, a plumbing snake may be necessary. Insert the snake into the drain and twist it until you encounter resistance. Continue twisting to break up the clog. Once the snake has dislodged the obstruction, withdraw it and flush the debris with hot water.
#5 P-Trap Cleaning
If none of the preceding methods prove effective, the clog may be located in the P-trap, the curved pipe beneath the sink. To address this, place a bucket beneath the trap to catch any potential water spillage. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts on both ends of the P-trap, then remove the pipe. Clean out any debris within the trap and reassemble it.
